Brexit warning appears on UK motorway signs

Brexit warnings that are directed at lorry drivers have appeared on motorways all over the United Kingdom.

A number of motorists have reported seeing the electronic updates in the run-up to the UK’s scheduled Brexit Day on 31st October 2019.

It is thought that the notifications are part of Operation Yellowhammer – the country’s plans that are being drawn up for what would possibly happen if we were to leave the European Union without a deal.

According to Devon Live:

Illuminated display signs on the M5 near Exeter are this morning advising motorists to be prepared for disruption caused by Brexit on November 1.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to take the UK out of the EU on October 31, with or without a deal – and said he would “rather be dead in a ditch” than ask Brussels for an extension.

Now signs on the M5 at J30 are displaying a message that reads: “Freight to EU may change November 1. Check papers.”

The Government’s website – in guidance published yesterday – warns hauliers and commercial drivers that UK hauliers “must have the correct licences and permits” to transport goods between the EU if the UK leaves without a deal.

However, the Government goes on to say: “The EU has agreed that for a transitional period UK hauliers will be able to continue using their current licences to do journeys to and from the EU. This currently applies until 31 December 2019 and is likely to be extended to 31 July 2020.

Is this so-called ‘Project Fear?’
