A driver has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for causing the death of her passenger in a 2022 M62 crash. A court heard the hired Lamborghini reached speeds of up to 143mph.

West Yorkshire Police said Humaira Batool, 26, from Bradford, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on 3 November 2026 for causing the death of 20-year-old Mohammed Shaan Hussain by dangerous driving. A jury found her guilty on 9 September 2026.

The force said the court heard that Batool reached up to 143mph in the hired Lamborghini Urus in the early hours of 21 December 2022. That is the top speed given in evidence. The police statement does not give an exact speed at the moment of impact.

The 2022 collision

Police said the car went out of control in wet weather at about 4.20am on the westbound M62 between junctions 22 and 23. It struck a barrier, overturned and caught fire. Mr Hussain suffered fatal injuries. Batool suffered serious leg injuries.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in January 2024. Sentencing came almost four years after the crash. It was due on 2 November, but she did not attend. Judge Ray Singh issued a bench warrant, and she was arrested at hospital and brought to court, according to press reports.

A family’s loss

In statements released by police, Mr Hussain’s mother and brother described the effect of his death on the family. His mother remembered a much-loved son whose plans had been cut short. His brother spoke of his kindness and the loss felt by those who knew him.

A speed limit is a maximum, not a target. Drivers must also allow for road and weather conditions and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. The Highway Code‘s general driving guidance explains speed and stopping distances.
